I love making homemade bread.  There’s nothing quite like slicing into a loaf of rustic bread while it’s still warm from the oven.  Add in some good olive oil for dipping, and I’m a happy camper!

However, homemade bread is a process.  It takes time.  While I really enjoy the process, sometimes I just don’t have time to make homemade bread.  After all, we’re heading into the warmer months here in upstate New York.  That means there are soccer balls to be kicked and home runs to be hit…and maybe a couple frisbees to be lost in the bushes, too!

These Cheesy Crescent Rolls are a great option for those times when you want homemade bread, but don’t have time to make it.  These rolls are buttery, cheesy and delicious…and they only take about 5 minutes to prep!  Oh, and the best part about these rolls?  They’re a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen!

Cheesy Crescent Rolls

As I’ve mentioned a number of times over the past year, our 5-year-old son, Robbie, has been home with us for quite some time now.  Both Laura and I have been working from home since last March, and we decided to keep Robbie home with us.  The past ~14 months have been an adventure.  There have been a lot of difficult times, but there have also been a lot of fun times.  One of my favorite things about having Robbie at home with me?  He’s taken an interest in baking, and he’s actually a great help in the kitchen!

I like to think Robbie will grow up with an interest in cooking and baking.  I personally grew up helping my mom in the kitchen, and to this day I have fond memories of making banana bread and chocolate cake with her.  (I also have memories of that time she had me whip egg whites until stiff…by hand.  She did that to show me how long it takes, and I think my arm still hurts from it.)

For these Cheesy Crescent Rolls, I employed my sous chef to shred the cheese and prep the rolls.  He did a great job!  And then he helped eat the evidence of his hard work once the rolls came out of the oven.  As noted above, these rolls are super easy to make – even on summer evenings when you’re busy with games of backyard baseball!

While warm, flaky crescent rolls are certainly tasty by themselves, the addition of shredded cheese, fresh herbs and a bit of garlic powder takes these rolls from good to great!  For the cheese, I opted for Cabot’s Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese.  I’m partial to the flavor of sharp cheddar cheese, and Cabot makes several sharp cheddars that are downright delicious.  This bold cheese is great for snacking (I do it all the time), but it’s also quite tasty in grilled cheese sammiches.  In this case, I shredded a bit of that cheese as a way to amplify the flavor in these Cheesy Crescent Rolls.

The ingredients list for this recipe is short – meaning these crescent rolls can be made in a jiffy! These pastries make for a great appetizer or side dish for dinner, and they also taste great as an afternoon snack!

If you think warm, flaky crescent rolls are tasty, then wait until you’ve tried warm, flaky crescent rolls filled with gooey melted cheese!  Honestly, any of Cabot’s cheeses could work well in this recipe.  We’re huge fans of Cabot Creamery here in our house.  The farm families who own Cabot are located throughout New York and New England, and a number of those farm families are here in our area.  Aside from the local aspect, Cabot’s cheeses are incredibly tasty!

If you’re looking for a spicy kick for these crescent rolls, try Cabot’s Habanero Cheddar or Pepper Jack.  Looking for more of a smooth, buttery flavor?  Perhaps go with a Mild Cheddar or even Cabot’s Muenster Cheese.  (Laura grew up calling that one ‘monster cheese,’ and now Robbie has started calling it monster cheese, too.  Hilarious!)  No matter which type of cheese you pick, I hope you enjoy these Cheesy Crescent Rolls as much as we do around here.  And I hope you have a sous chef to help make them!

Aside from the type of cheese, you could also mix up this recipe by adding some chopped, cooked chicken (rotisserie chicken works well) or make a pizza version with some marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. They make for an easy dinner side dish – Happy baking!

  1. Will be making this soon can i use vegan cheese as am dairy free also can i use puff pastry or pizza dough as i dont have crescent roll dough in Singapore pl i love your website looks better than your old website and commenting on your recipes will dm you if i make this and let you know how it goes Thanks Ramya

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback on the new site, Ramya – it’s a work in progress, but it’s getting there! As far as dough, you could absolutely use puff pastry or pizza dough. Puff pastry would be flakier (which is great!) while pizza dough would be a bit heartier and chewier (not necessarily a bad thing). Either way, the point is that it’s an easy recipe! Just adjust to what ingredients are available over there in Singapore. Happy baking!

  2. What great photos of your son cooking! These look wonderful. So wonderful I need to NOT make them! But I love what you created. And Yay! The website is fixed!

    1. Yes! The website is indeed fixed…well sorta. It’s a work in progress, but it’s getting there. Thanks for noticing! Robbie and I sure had fun cooking together making these rolls. Simple, easy recipe, but still quite delicious. Thanks, Mimi!

Robbie is growing up so incredibly fast (There’s a HUGE difference between these and the previous photos you shared!) I mean, a couple of years more, and he’ll get his own food blog!
And these crescents look so good. I love savoury, especially cheesy, baked things probably more than sweet ones (It doesn’t meant I won’t have a cookie after a cheese bun though). So these bad (good) guys are right up my alley!

    1. It’s been a bit since I’ve shared photos of Robbie – I would guess last summer maybe? Either way, he totally has hit a growth spurt! Laura and I say the same thing all the time when we watch him running around the yard with the dogs.

These crescent rolls are so tasty, too, Ben! And the best part is they are so darned easy to make. (And you can still have a cookie afterwards – I give you permission. Haha!)

    Hey David,
I’m loving the updates to your site! Looks fabulous! Know what else looks fabulous…the cheesy crescent rolls! Love all that cheese and I love that Robbie is helping out in the kitchen. Too many kids grow up only knowing how to heat up something in the microwave.
    Thanks for a great recipe!
    Kathy 🙂

    1. Thanks, Kathy! The new site is coming along nicely – still ironing out a few kinks, but it’s getting there. As far as these crescent rolls, they are indeed fabulous…and so easy to make, too! I totally know what you mean about getting kids into the kitchen. Robbie has been a great help!

    1. Yes! I totally agree with you, Sherry. It started as a way to “entertain” Robbie during the covid times, but he’s taken an interest in it now. Pretty cool stuff! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Michelle! These crescent rolls are indeed easy…and a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen, too. 🙂

These rolls look awesome, David! I’m with you, sharp cheddar is always the best! Glad you have a good sous chef! He looks very determined in the photo! Great easy recipe, too!

    1. Thanks so much, Laura! We almost always have a block of sharp cheddar open in the fridge, so it was easy to shred a bit of it into these rolls. So good…and so easy! Perfect way to get Robbie to help me, too. He was focused on his job!! 🙂

  6. I love the fresh new look on your site, David! It’s fantastic.
Great shots of Robbie cooking. I’m sure he’ll keep these memories with him always!
And of course the crescent rolls look delicious. 🙂 ~Valentina

    1. Thanks so much, Valentina! I figured it was time to give the site a facelift. 🙂 And I’m with you on the shots of Robbie cooking – I know I’ll look back on these photos in a few years and really enjoy them! Thanks so much!

Aww what sweet pics! Robbie is already such a pro! These cheesy crescent rolls look absolutely amazing, David. What a great way to get that homemade bread taste, and still enjoy the day! Also, your mom is AWESOME. Whipping egg whites to stiff peaks by hand takes some serious strength and skill!

    1. Thank you so much, Shannon! Robbie and I enjoyed making these together, and I love these photos. I know I’ll look back on them years from now with fond memories of my kitchen helper! 🙂
