But it’s mid-March, and I’m over the snow. I’m over the single-digit temperatures. So yesterday I decided to take things into my own hands. What’s the fastest way to make it feel like summer again? Nope, not running around the yard in a bathing suit. It’s firing up the grill. I just rolled that bad boy right out there on top of the snow and ice. I might have had to shovel a path to get to the grill, but you know what? It’s time. Tomorrow is the first day of Spring, and I officially declare grilling season open! To celebrate, I made these delicious Cheese-Stuffed Curry Burgers. They’re cheesy, loaded with flavor and the perfect way to begin grilling season!
My wife is a huge fan of Indian food. I, on the other hand, love classic, American food. Fusion cuisine is all the rage right now, and we got to thinking about how we could create an Indian fusion recipe at home. Of course, burgers came to mind for me, and my wife suggested adding curry powder into the burgers. I’ll be honest that I was a bit skeptical about these burgers the first time we made them. But these Cheese-Stuffed Curry Burgers turned out to be really tasty. The curry powder complemented the beef burgers quite well, and I mixed in pieces of Kraft Naturals Cheddar Cheese Slices for an extra cheesy flavor. I’d picked up the Kraft Naturals Slices at Walmart with the intention of just melting the slices on top of the burger, but my wife actually had the genius idea to tear the slices into pieces and mix those into the burger. I actually now prefer this method as it creates these pockets of melted cheese throughout the burger. Talk about delicious!
The Indian flavors in these Cheese-Stuffed Curry Burgers come partly from the curry powder and partly from the raita topping. Curry powder is a mixture of spices, and it can vary quite a bit from one version to the next. We happened to have some mild Madras curry powder in our spice cabinet, so I used that this time. But I’ve made these burgers before with standard curry powder from the spice aisle, and they tasted great. Just know that each curry powder is slightly different, but they should all work fine for the purposes of these burgers!
To complete these Indian fusion burgers, I added a raita-like topping before serving. Raita is a classic Indian yogurt-based condiment that often appears as a dip or sauce. Since I wanted the raita to stay on top of the burgers, I used Greek yogurt to create a somewhat thicker version. The cool raita topping partners quite well with the spicy hot-off-the-grill burgers. All together, these Cheese-Stuffed Curry Burgers are a delicious creation that blends my love of classic American style food with my wife’s love of Indian cuisine. And of course, these burgers were an excellent way to welcome in the first day of Spring and the start of a (hopefully) very long grilling season!
