Fresh strawberries blended with cream cheese and yogurt, this Strawberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt is the perfect treat for summer evenings on the back porch! Is it ever ok to tell a lie?  I know my parents taught me that lying is bad, but sometimes a little white lie is ok, right?  Eh, turns out that parents are some of the worst liers out there.  Laura recently sent me one of those viral Facebook posts, and this one was all about lies that parents tell their kids.  And it had me laughing so hard I was crying!  I’ve included a couple of the better lies below, but the comment section is full of hilarity.  Who knew lies could be so funny?

  • Dad: “People get 10,000 words per month.  If you reach the limit, you can’t physically speak until the new month begins.”  If I had been especially talkative, my Dad would say, “Careful now, I have to think you’re up over 9,000 by now.”  That would shut me right up.

I’m thinking my wife should’ve used this one on me.  Sometimes I like to just talk away.  It’s always about important stuff.  I swear!  But here’s the real irony: little Robbie yabbers away like it’s his job.  No real words yet, but he’ll talk for 15 minutes straight about nothing.  At least Laura is used to that one!

  • Fresh strawberries blended with cream cheese and yogurt, this Strawberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt is the perfect treat for summer evenings on the back porch! My Dad used to tell me that Santa was tired of milk and cookies.  I’d get extra toys if I left Doritos and a beer.  That went on for years.

Oh, this one is most definitely happening.  Now I have no problem with milk and cookies, but I hear that Santa likes craft beer.  Especially citrus-y IPA’s.  And Spicy Nacho Doritos.

  • My parents got me to eat calamari by telling me they were “Italian Onion Rings.”

This is the one that had me laughing uncontrollably.  And you know what?  This lie probably would’ve worked on me.  I don’t love calamari, but I do love everything Italian.  So bring me another order of those Italian Onion Rings, please!

  • Fresh strawberries blended with cream cheese and yogurt, this Strawberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt is the perfect treat for summer evenings on the back porch!Chuck E Cheese is only for birthday parties.  You have to be invited to one to go there.

We drove by a Chuck E Cheese when we were out in Rochester for our curling tournament back in February.  I thought it would be fun to go in and relive our childhood, but then I realized that it might be strange for 4 grown men to walk into Chuck E Cheese together.  Robbie is my key to getting back to those ski ball machines.  No one will think twice about a grown man playing ski ball when his son is with him!

  • If the ice cream truck is playing music, it means they’ve run out of ice cream.

Genius!  We hear the ice cream truck go through our neighborhood on warm summer evenings.  Laura has always said we should run out and catch the ice cream man sometime.  I’m thinking Robbie will be leading the charge down the driveway when he’s older.  That is unless the ice cream truck is playing music.

Fresh strawberries blended with cream cheese and yogurt, this Strawberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt is the perfect treat for summer evenings on the back porch!Speaking of ice cream and lies, today’s post fits right in!  Last week, I whipped up a delicious batch of Strawberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt, and we’ve been enjoying it outside on the porch in the evenings.  My mother always told me that frozen yogurt was the same thing as ice cream.  Lies!  But you know what?  It’s kinda close.  Close enough to fill the ice cream craving!

For this Strawberry Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt, I added a bunch of real strawberries along with a bit of cream cheese.  And then I swirled some graham cracker crumbs in at the end.  This FroYo totally reminded me of strawberry cheesecake, too.  No lies.  I promise!

  1. Bahahahah…..Italian onion rings?! That was so funny! I love that one. Every now and then as a kid, my parents would cook something like moose and say it was beef. If I thought it was beef, I’d eat it. If they said it was moose, no way. Funny thing!! Now, let’s talk strawberry cheesecake frozen yogurt. I bet this is not only practically the ‘same’ as ice-cream, but way better. Strawberries, cream cheese, and yogurt? Yes, please 🙂 What an awesome Summer treat!

    1. Dawn! I don’t think I’ve ever chatted with anyone who’s actually eaten moose…err, beef…err, moose. 🙂 And yes, this frozen yogurt was amazing! It did freeze really hard (harder than ice cream), but I just left it out on the counter for a few minutes before scooping it out. Either way, it was definitely an awesome summer treat! Thank you!

  2. Hahaha! The lies we tell our kids. Shame on us parents and shame on our parents!! This ice cream looks devine! Tell your wife I say you´re a keeper! 🙂

    1. Shame on us parents is right, Johlene. What is the biggest lie you’ve ever told your kids? I bet it’s a good one! And thank you so much for the compliment…I’ll be telling my wife that one tonight! 🙂

  3. Hahaha – that one about the ice cream truck has gotta be my favorite!!!
The “lie” my parents constantly told me was “if you eat those seeds, you will have a tree grow in you” – as I was constantly eating lemon seeds, apple seeds, orange seeds, not sure why – I had a seed fetish I guess?! As I got older, I figured they were lying then I came across this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1169861/Shocked-Russian-surgeons-open-man-thought-tumour–FIR-TREE-inside-lung.html
    hmmm….
BTW – your fro yo with graham crackers and cream cheese sounds so delicious – I’d definitely have to invent a “lie” to keep Lil Shashi away from this deliciousness! 🙂

    1. Hahaha…I can just see little Shashi (actually little Shashi, not lil Shashi) running around with a pocket full of seeds. Ok, that article about the guy with the fir tree…woah. That scared me a bit. Next thing you know, you’re gonna have a lemon tree popping out of your ear!

    1. Thank you so much, Jennifer! This was my first stab at making frozen yogurt at home. It turned out quite well! I had to do everything in my power to resist eating it when it was soft right out of the ice cream maker… 🙂

  4. Oooh I’m totally making this once my strawberries come in. They blossomed the other week so in a few weeks for sure!
My Dad told me Santa preferred Cheese to cookies. I took it very seriously 🙂

    1. Good luck on those strawberries, Lauren! I am so jealous. We tried growing strawberries for a couple of years, and they grew well. To be accurate, the plants grew well. The chipmunks destroyed any of the berries as soon as they popped up…while they were still green! And Santa does love cheese. He told me so himself! 🙂

  5. Hi David! This sounds so perfectly refreshing! Plus, I’d get to eat it all because Gary hates yogurt! All parents tell those little white lies, I think it’s easier than explaining things to kids in detail! The important thing is to explain the important stuff! 🙂

    1. Haha! I like the way you think. It’s ok to pamper Gary every now and then. But sometimes you just have to make something that he won’t touch…so you can be greedy and have it all to yourself! Laura was fighting a nasty cold when I made this frozen yogurt, so she wasn’t in the mood for much besides chicken soup. And that meant that I got all of the FroYo to myself! 🙂

  6. Hahaha! I love those lies! I don’t think my parents ever used those particular ones on me, but I sure wish I’d known about the ice cream truck music when we had little people in the house! That strawberry cheesecake frozen yogurt is to die for! I love the pink color! And you should have told me you were making this – I’d have totally sent you all the strawberries you could ever need!

    1. That ice cream truck lie is one of the best! I’m shocked the kid believed it…but then at the same time, I’m shocked that kid ever trusted his/her parents again after that one! 🙂 Oh man, I’m so jealous of you and your strawberries, Rachelle. Those stupid chipmunks in our yard…they chewed through metal fencing to get to our strawberry patch. Needless to say, we quit wasting our time on strawberries.

  7. Two things, David. First, I believe this froyo could do the morning shift. Soon enough, it will Wimbledon time, which means strawberries and cream in the early morning. Second, about lies … my uncles used to torture me by feeding me some totally innocuous lie, and then stringing me along until it developed into something so outrageous that I’d realize I’d been had from the get-go. I HATED it. And now you know who does exactly the same things to his nieces and nephews?

    1. This froyo can definitely do the morning shift, Jeff. It freezes harder than ice cream (must be the lack of cream?), but if you let it sit out for a few minutes then it’s perfect. Of course, that’s assuming you don’t eat it all straight from the ice cream maker when it’s still in soft-serve form. And I didn’t even think about Wimbledon and berries + cream. Genius! I had an uncle who did the same exact thing to me, too. And he still tries it whenever we get together…but I’m (usually) on to his game now.

  8. I don’t know what about other things, but ice cream and frozen yogurt aren’t the same. That’s the most outrageous lie I’ve ever heard. But frozen yogurt is a delicious thing though. And I absolutely trust you, David when you say it reminds a strawberry cheesecake – you’ve never lied to us. And I’m not going to lie either – this looks fantastic!

    1. I’m not lying, Ben! This one totally reminded me of strawberry cheesecake. I mean, it’s not actually a strawberry cheesecake. Obviously. But the taste was totally there. Thanks for the inspiration to finally make frozen yogurt at home! 🙂

  9. Omg David I literally cried with laughter reading the small lies your parents used to tell you!! Onion rings as calamari , ice cream truck music means no ice cream haha and the best – santa wants doritos & beer!! Ohh I love your parents!! They are one smart parents!! 😉 Now you can have this yogurt to your hearts content as now it’s your turn to make small lies to your kid hehe!!

    1. So my parents didn’t tell me all of those lies, Ami…but they told me quite a few! And you better believe I’m stocking up on ides to tell little Robbie lies like this as he gets older. He’s gonna learn never that his Dad is a real trickster! 🙂

  10. “My parents got me to eat calamari by telling me they were “Italian Onion Rings.”

omg. I am trying that on Niki. She is so bloody picky! Now as for the other myths….Please don’t do that to poor Robbie or I may have to be a self-appointed God Blog Father and give him Ben and Jerry’s.

    1. I totally bet you could pull the wool over Niki’s eyes, mate. Heck, who am I kidding. I bet you’ve totally pulled the wool over her eyes many, many times. And I’m definitely thinking you need to treat Niki to some Italian onion rings soon. She’ll love em! And for the love of God, if you show up and fill Robbie up with Ben & Jerry’s and then run away…I’ll hunt you down to the ends of the earth. Even Australia…since that’s pretty much the end of the earth. 🙂

  11. Hehehe! The one about the ice cream truck music – well, my Mum definitely should have told me and my brother that! We have those trucks here in Australia too, although you don’t see them much nowadays. I swear when we were kids we could hear it coming from a million miles away and she must have cursed the damn ice cream company every single time, because we always ended up with a whole lot of ice cream. Now whenever I hear that music, it sounds kind of creepy and out of tune – or is that just me? Of course, speaking of ice cream, this recipe looks amazing David! I love how few ingredients it has, and it’s most definitely much lower in fat and sugar than your store-bought variety of ice cream or frozen yoghurt. That sprinkling of biscuit crumbs throughout sounds divine, too!

    1. Yeah, those ice cream trucks aren’t as common around here in the States, either, Lisa. But we did have one that would come around our area occasionally last summer. We never went out and got any ice cream, though. Maybe this year… And YES! The music on those trucks is so darned creepy. Especially considering half of the trucks have half-broken speakers. So it comes out as an eerie song like something out of a horror movie instead. Haha! Good times, right? 🙂

    1. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, right, Manali? 🙂 If someone offers me a bowl of frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, I’m certainly not gonna turn it down!!

    1. Haha! Own a restaurant? You are way too kind, Muna! I don’t know about owning a restaurant…but I do know I just enjoy eating! 🙂

  12. This post made me laugh so much! Italian onion rings – parents can be so creative. I also loved the ice cream van one. Genius! Spring has finally arrived in London and it is so nice to sit in the sunshine. Perfect timing for your delicious ice cream/frozen yoghurt recipe

    1. I know, right, Miriam. Italian onion rings? That one had me laughing historically, too! Oh man, I would love to be in London to enjoy some of that spring sun. Laura and I were talking the other day about possibly taking a trip to London in the Fall. We’ll see what happens! 🙂

  13. hahahaha, Italian onion rings? Hilarious! I also love your recipes David! I love that you put graham crackers in this for an added crunch! Now we just need the UK to warm up a little so I can make this!

    1. Thank you so much, Lucie! I’m sending you some warmer air as we speak! (Of course, I say this as the forecast here tonight is for temperatures not far above freezing…) 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Ruwani! I bet it is indeed hot over there in the Middle East…I can’t even imagine. Sending some of this frozen yogurt over to help you cool off! 🙂

  14. This fro yo sounds so yummy! I love strawberries and strawberry anything, including ice cream/fro yo. And I’m the same way, my mom always says that I would just gab away as a baby/little kid.. and I’m still chatty as an adult! haha

PS – Love the site look!

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words, Nicole! The site is a work in progress, but it’s coming along. I would much rather just sit down and eat strawberry froyo than work on html coding! 🙂

  15. The small tricks you told your kids are lovely!:) I particularly loved the Santa and Italian Onion Rings ones. Also must try the new fro yo recipe, adding cream cheese seems to make it really smooth and creamy:) Really nice! Congrats!

    1. Hey there, Monica! Thank you so much for the kind words. 🙂 The cream cheese added to this yogurt really does make it super creamy. It’s still a frozen yogurt, so it hardens up quite a bit in the freezer…so make sure to let it thaw at room temperature for a bit before scooping it out. (Or just eat it all before it goes in the freezer in the first place…haha!) Enjoy!

    1. Hey Sarah! Great question. You absolutely can make this ice cream without an ice cream maker. I’ve done it in the past – but it was long before I ever started writing this blog. I did a quick search and found two good articles about how to do this. 1) David Lebovitz’ version: https://www.davidlebovitz.com/making-ice-crea-1/ and 2) The Kitchn’s version (based on David’s): https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-ice-cream-without-124210

As you’ll see, both require a bit of effort, but they are totally doable! As I recall, I used a blender with a bit of extra cream to blend the frozen ice cream the last time I made it without an ice cream maker. With all of that said, ice cream makers aren’t all that expensive and summer is quickly approaching! If you have room to store it, I’d say just get an ice cream maker. 🙂 I hope this helps!!

  16. Made this and was so, so good. I was wondering if you have ever tried using any other fruit as a replacement for the strawberries. I have peaches and was wondering how they would work??

    1. Hey Mary! I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe – it’s great for the summer. 🙂 I have not tried this with any other types of fruit yet…I should try that though. I think peaches would work well since they get pureed. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out? I’ve got a bunch of peaches to use, too, and this sounds like a great way to use ’em!
