I love a good dip. Whether it’s a spinach dip with fresh veggies or homemade queso with tortilla chips, you can count on me digging in. There’s no need to worry about leftover dips when I’m around!
The inspiration for this Easy Sour Cream Dip came from those containers of French onion dip that you find in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. We often pick up a container or two of that dip whenever we have friends over for New Years Eve or the Super Bowl.
Well this time, I got to thinking: I bet I could make a homemade version of that dip. It shouldn’t be all that difficult. I was right. This dip is easy to make, and it was quite delicious. We served it with a combination of pita chips and raw veggies (carrot sticks, bell peppers, sliced cucumbers, celery sticks, etc.). Crackers and/or salted potato chips would also be great dippers here, too.
Easy Sour Cream Dip
This Easy Sour Cream Dip recipe may very well be the easiest recipe I’ve ever posted. (Well, minus that recipe for Toast…) You literally take a container of sour cream and add in a generous amount of minced onions, dried herbs and spices. Refrigerate it overnight so the flavors come together, and you’ve got a sour cream chip dip that tastes fantastic. Seriously. It’s that easy!
The key to this dip is refrigerating it overnight. As with most dips and soups, something magical happens once this Easy Sour Cream Dip rests in the fridge overnight. I took a bite (or three) of this dip on the first day, and it was tasty. I wanted more. I took a bite (or six) of this dip on the second day. Holy cow! No need for the store-bought version!
Sour Cream Dip Ingredients
- Sour Cream – this is the entire base of the dip. I used light sour cream, but either light or regular would work here.
- Minced Onions (aka Onion Flakes) – these are different than onion powder. Minced onions are onions that have been finely minced and then dehydrated. Onion powder could probably be used in a pinch, but the onion flakes add a bit of texture to the dip.
- Dried Dill – dill and onion are the prominent flavors in this dip.
- Dried Parsley – parsley adds color and flavor. I also topped the dip with chopped fresh parsley for appearances, but that is optional.
- Garlic Powder – garlic powder adds depth of flavor, and it pairs well with the minced onions and dill.
- Kosher Salt – salt balances the taste of this dip. Feel free to reduce or omit if you’re serving with salty potato chips.
While this Easy Sour Cream Dip does require a bit of advance planning, the actual recipe itself is incredibly easy. I estimated 5 minutes of prep time, but honestly it takes less than that. 5 minutes if you include cleaning up after yourself!
If you’re hunting for a delicious, creamy dip recipe, then give this one a try. The onion and dill flavors come through, and you’ll be find yourself going back for just one more bite…again and again and again! I hope you enjoy this dip as much as we do!

Your Easy Sour Cream Dip is a game-changer! I love how you’ve recreated the classic French onion dip magic at home. the simplicity of this recipe is a winner, and the fact that it tastes even better than the store-bought version is impressive.

I love dips too! I always have some sort of dip on hand, whether it’s store-bought or homemade. This sour cream dip sounds delicious, David! Have a great weekend, my friend.
Weekends just aren’t the same without dips, right?? This sour cream dip is so darned easy to make, and it’s absolutely delicious! Hope you had a great weekend, Dawn!
Sounds delicious, David! You know, French onion soup dip (made with Lipton’s) is one of my ‘guilty pleasures’ but this sound so much better. Definitely going to give it a try soon.
Oh I totally know what you mean about French onion soup dip – we still make that one around here, and it never lasts very long. But give this homemade version a try! It’s super easy and really tasty, too!
oh for the good old days when i used to eat sour cream! I love it but my stomach (and weight) does not 🙂 This sounds good David.
Maybe low-fat sour cream?? 🙂 Thanks, Sherry!
Oh I love sour cream based dips – they are super easy to make, fresh, and versatile (I love the addition of finely minced radishes). Also, that’s one of my favorite addition to potatoes, either boiled or fried/baked. If you haven’t tried potatoes with sour cream, give it a try!
That idea of adding some radishes sounds great, Ben – it would bring a peppery crunch that would go well with the brightness of the sour cream!
