What is it about that sauce? Outback’s Bloomin’ Onion Sauce is strangely addicting, and I swear I could drizzle that stuff on everything! From the classic Bloomin’ Onion to the newer Bloomin’ Fried Chicken, the sauce is the piece that takes it from good to great.
To be fair, Laura and I didn’t really go to chain restaurants much until Robbie came along. However, once you have a toddler (now a 7-year-old!) in tow, you realize that a nice quiet date-style restaurant really isn’t a good choice anymore. We still do date nights on occasion, but we also enjoy going out to family casual restaurants with Robbie.

That’s where Outback Steakhouse comes in. Their Bloomin’ Onion Sauce (technically called “Bloom Sauce” although we just call in Bloomin’ Onion Sauce) is delicious. In fact, it’s so tasty that I needed to make this Copycat Outback Bloomin’ Onion Sauce here at home! And guess what? It’s easy. Like insanely easy. So if you’re craving that iconic sauce at home, just grab a bag of frozen onion rings or French fries and whip up a batch of this sauce!
Copycat Outback Bloomin’ Onion Sauce
As I was reading dozens of different versions of Outback’s sauce, I realized that it’s not all that different than the spicy Cajun dipping sauce that I’ve made for a number of different recipes over the years. In fact, that sauce was inspired by Zaxby’s sauce – Zaxby’s is a famous fried chicken joint, and they serve their chicken fingers with a very tasty “Zax sauce.”

It’s probably not all that surprising, but this Copycat Outback Bloomin’ Onion Sauce starts with mayonnaise as it’s base. Laura and I learned about dipping fries in mayo when we visited Belgium a number of years ago – it sounds odd, but holy cow!
So if you take that ‘dipping fries in mayo’ concept and then just add a bit of horseradish, ketchup and seasonings? Well you end up with a Copycat Outback Bloomin’ Onion Sauce. I’d love to try this one by substituting half of the mayo for sour cream – just to see if I can cut back on the calories slightly. Next time…next time.

As with most sauces (and soups for that matter), this one will taste much better if you mix it in advance and then refrigerate it overnight. The flavors will meld together into a magical combination of deliciousness!
If you’re hunting for a fun appetizer idea for the Super Bowl (or really a fun appetizer idea for anything), then put this recipe on the menu. We made a bag of frozen onion rings and served this sauce with friends – leftovers were not a problem that night! Enjoy!

Cant wait to make this soon for me can i use vegan mayo i never had copycat outback bloomin onion sauce before perfect for snacks and your snacks recipes love your recipes as always brightens up my day everyday after work
Yes! I haven’t made a vegan version of this recipe myself, but I would think vegan mayo would be fine here. This is a fun (and rather addicting) appetizer for weekend gatherings with friends!
Oooh I haven’t been to Outback in years! More than a decade, but now I’m craving…. and I didn’t realize Robbie is the same age as my youngest!
No way! Yup, Robbie just turned 7 this past year. He’s growing like a weed! In other news, feed that Bloomin Onion craving with a batch of this dip this weekend. It’s pretty fantastic…especially if you have friends over to share it! 🙂
Never heard of this sauce and now I am intrigued to try it out. I am sure they would taste even better because we usually make an almost similar one just with ketchup and mayo, the additional spices would give this sauce more flavour depth
So Outback Steakhouse is a huge chain here in the US. They make a “Bloomin Onion” (fried onion) with this fantastic sauce. Fortunately it’s easy to make at home!
Outback holds a special place in my childhood nostalgic heart and this sauce looks so good! I imagine just about every appetizer being dipped in it on the Superbowl!
I hear ya, Caitlin! I remember going with my parents to Outback when I was a kid. And that Bloomin Onion? It never lasted long at our table! And you’re totally right about every Super Bowl appetizer being dipped in this. Yum!!
ooh you are making me drool David. I love! onion rings but my waistline does not. Yes we too discovered fries with mayo many moons ago in Belgium. It was a revelation back then (we were young) but of course you get them with aioli everywhere here in Aus. Depending on where you eat here, you can still get tomato sauce (ketchup) with them but mostly it’s aioli! Hope you had a fab festive break! cheers and happy new year.
I hear ya, Sherry. I do love onion rings, but I have to limit how often I eat them…especially this time of the year when we’re losing all of the holiday weight! So fries with aioli still hasn’t caught on here in the States. There are a couple of stores doing it, but it’s nothing like what you see in Belgium where they are on every street corner. Fortunately, we can just make our own at home. Happy new year to you, too, my friend!
and wow Robbie is 7!! i remember reading you when he was just a wee thing …
Haha…he’s growing like a weed! 🙂 And isn’t it crazy how fast time flies!?
I love how simple and flavorful this sauce is, David! Great for dipping all kinds of things (I bet it would be great with shrimp) or even as a sandwich spread.
Oooo…this would be a great dipping sauce for shrimp! I’ve never tried it as a replacement for mayo on a sandwich, but it would probably be good. Can you imagine a BLT with this sauce instead of mayo!?
I’ve never had bloomin onion sauce but by the sounds of it, I know I’d love it! That horseradish in there must add such a lovely flavour. I’m pretty sure this would be good with just about anything … and it comes just in time for the weekend! Time to break out the onion rings!! Oh, and fries dipped in mayo? So good, right?!
This sauce is absolutely fantastic, Dawn. It’s not healthy at all, but then again that’s probably what makes it so good. Hah! Definitely grab some onion rings and make a batch of this sauce. You won’t be sad about it!
Great sounding sauce! I think it’s important to take kids to restaurants. It’s good for them to learn restaurant manners and eventually, the benefits of a leisurely dinner! Not yet at 7, though. My own son-in-law had never been exposed to leisurely dinners till he came into our family! He was a quick learner!
You are absolutely right about taking kids out to eat. Robbie enjoys the experience, although we do have to do our homework in advance to make sure there are things on the menu he’ll eat. We took him out this past weekend, and we made him order his meal. They grow up so fast!! Thanks, Mimi!
David, these onion rings looks like absolute perfection, and the sauce sounds wonderful! You’re amazing!
Why thank you, sir. This sauce was absolutely delicious. I think I could smear it on everything and be quite happy about it!
My daughter loves dipping sauces of every kind! It doesn’t matter what it is, she’s looking for some kind of sauce. This will be a fun sauce to share with her!
If your daughter loves sauces, then you need to make this one, Kathy! I swear this sauce could be used in SO many different ways. The onion ring is classic, but I could see it for other things…or even to replace mayo on a BLT sandwich. Yum!!
