Now that the tree has been trimmed and the presents wrapped (mostly), it’s time to enjoy the magic of the holidays! And by magic, I mean all of the delicious comfort foods that we make during this time of the year. I’m talking Maple Glazed Cinnamon Rolls and Gingerbread Cake. I’m talking homemade pizzas and Spaghetti & Meatballs (my wife’s family is Italian). This is the season for all of your favorite foods…and today’s recipe is definitely going on that list!
A few weeks ago, we made this Chicken Pot Pie Wreath. Chicken Pot Pie is an all-time classic comfort food, and we had fun making that pot pie in the shape of a wreath. As soon as I took one bite of that recipe, I knew I wanted to make this Cheesy Sausage Wreath.

Cheesy Sausage Wreath
The inspiration here is the Southern favorite Biscuits with Sausage Gravy. Crumbly buttermilk biscuits topped with creamy gravy made from crumbled breakfast sausage. SO good! For this wreath version, we’re leaving the biscuits on the sidelines. Instead, we’re wrapping that creamy gravy filling in crescent roll dough. The result is a flaky shell filled with a cheesy sausage gravy. It’s delicious…so delicious that this has already earned a spot in our yearly holiday recipe lineup!
Just like with the chicken pot pie version, it feels like this Cheesy Sausage Wreath shouldn’t work. How do you wrap a creamy filling in crescent roll dough. The secret? Just a little longer on the stovetop. The gravy simmers for a little longer than normal which thickens it up. It might be thicker than you’d want for biscuits and gravy, but it’s the perfect consistency for this sausage wreath.

The sausage gravy filling is mouthwatering by itself, but we’re taking that filling to a new level – with shredded Monterey Jack cheese. Once that filling is spread onto the crescent dough, we sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheese on top before wrapping up the dough. The result is a cheesy, creamy filling wrapped inside of golden brown, flaky dough.

This recipe is perfect to make for houseguests during the holiday season! It’s both familiar and unique at the same time. It’s the kind of recipe that will have everyone asking how you made it. It’s the kind of recipe that becomes a holiday tradition!
Cabot Cheese
When it comes to cheese in our house, we’re a Cabot Creamery family. We absolutely love Cabot cheese! Their Seriously Sharp Cheddar is perhaps my all-time favorite cheese – I love slicing that up for cheese boards during the holiday season. While we didn’t use any cheddar in this Cheesy Sausage Wreath recipe, we did use Cabot’s Monterey Jack cheese. Monterey Jack is the ultimate melting cheese. The texture is smooth and creamy, and the taste is mild. It’s perfect for this breakfast recipe.

If you aren’t familiar with Cabot Creamery, then do a little reading on your own. Cabot is a co-op, which means the company is owned by the farm families themselves. The farms are located across New York and New England, and the families take immense pride in giving back to their communities. Cabot is a Certified B Corporation which speaks to their commitment to balance profit with purpose. All B Corps are required to balance the interests of their customers, their employees, the environment and their local communities.
But let’s circle back to this amazing Cheesy Sausage Wreath. I love biscuits and gravy – that’s my go-to Christmas morning and New Year’s Eve morning breakfast. This sausage wreath channels those same flavors with the added texture of gooey, melty cheese. In short – this recipe is mouthwateringly good!

How to Store Leftovers
Leftover slices of this sausage wreath should be allowed to cool fully to room temperature before being stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, place slices on a sheet pan and reheat in oven or toaster oven for 6-7 minutes, or until heated through. (Tip: Keep an eye on the leftovers while reheating. If needed, top with aluminum foil to prevent the tops of the slices from burning.) Unfortunately, these leftovers do not freeze well.
If you’re looking for a delicious and unique recipe for holiday breakfasts, then put this Cheesy Sausage Wreath on the menu. Serve slices of this wreath with a bowl of chopped fruit, and you’ve got a fantastic breakfast. This is a new favorite here in our house – and I hope it’ll become a new favorite in your house, too. Cheers!

Cheesy Sausage Wreath
Ingredients
- 16 oz. ground breakfast sausage casings removed
- ½ medium white onion diced
- 1 red bell pepper diced
- 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper plus more for topping
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 8 oz. packages crescent rolls
- 1½ cups shredded Cabot Monterey Jack cheese
- 1 large egg beaten
- {optional} ½ tsp flaked sea salt
- {optional} chopped Italian parsley for garnishing
Instructions
- Using a large skillet, add sausage, diced onions and diced bell pepper; place skillet over medium heat. Sauté, stirring occasionally, for 7-8 minutes or until onions and pepper have softened.
- Add butter and continue cooking until melted.
- Add flour, salt and pepper to skillet; stir until well combined. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 1-2 minutes, or until the flour has been absorbed.
- Add milk and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook at a low simmer, stirring often, until mixture thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon, approximately 13-15 minutes. (Note: The mixture should be thicker than traditional gravy at this stage as it will be getting folded into crescent dough.)
- Remove mixture from heat and set aside.
- Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375°F.
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Unroll crescent roll dough and separate dough into individual triangles. Lay crescent rolls in a circle on the prepared pan. (Note: Layer the pieces with the points towards the edges of the pan. The wider ends should overlap near the center of the pan.)
- Once gravy has cooled, spread the filling over the overlapping ends of the dough. Sprinkle cheese evenly on top.
- Fold the points of each piece of dough over the filling and pinch edges to seal.
- Brush tops of dough with the beaten egg.
- {Optional} Sprinkle top of dough with flaked sea salt and additional black pepper.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
- Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
- {Optional} Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
