This Masala Hummus Toast is a unique summer appetizer that will have everyone coming back for more!
When it comes to cooking, I’ve always been inspired by a Julia Childs quote that I stumbled across years ago. “Learn to cook, try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless and above all have fun.” I couldn’t agree more! After college, I took an interest in cooking and baking mainly as a way to save money. But I quickly moved on to original recipes as they provided a way to experiment, improvise and have fun.
Over the years, I have most definitely made mistakes. Laura still reminds me of the time that I used way, way, way too much cayenne pepper in a grilled chicken rub. I’m pretty sure I permanently disfigured a few of my taste buds with that one. But, hey, I learned! And now I’m much more careful when I open that container of cayenne pepper.
Summer entertaining is a sacred event around our house. (We actually purchased this house in part due to the ability to entertain on the back deck!) And since we all know that a good party requires good food, I decided to hit the kitchen and come up with a fun appetizer. I followed Julia’s advice about trying new recipes and being fearless…and the result was this Masala Hummus Toast. And this appetizer is so tasty that it might just become an unofficial meal. (Not like I speak from experience or anything!)
Several years ago, we came across a good recipe for peanut chaat. Peanut chaat is a classic Indian street food, and it’s a delicious combination of spicy (but not too spicy…I learned my lesson!) and tangy. Peanut chaat is certainly unique, too. In fact, I can’t think of many other recipes that use peanuts as a base for a savory appetizer. But trust me when I say that you won’t be able to stop once you start snacking on this Masala Hummus Toast.
We absolutely love Sabra hummus around our house. If you were to open our refrigerator (please don’t do that…something might fall out), then chances are you’d find a container of Sabra hummus in there. I’m partial to the Classic flavor, but I’m also not too picky. Roasted Red Pepper, Basil Pesto, Chipotle…you name the flavor, and I’ll eat it! In fact, pita chips + Sabra hummus has been my go-to lunch all week. And I seriously sit at my computer wondering when it’s acceptable to stop and eat lunch. So far, I’ve decided that anything after 11am is fair game!
Laura and I were chatting about fun summer appetizers the other night, and she suggested combining hummus with peanut chaat. Umm, yes! We’ve all heard of the guacamole toast craze, right? Well what about hummus toast? More specifically, what about Masala Hummus Toast that’s topped with a flavorful peanut chaat? It makes for one killer summer appetizer! The creaminess of Sabra’s Classic Hummus combined with the spiciness of the peanut chaat is one fun combination.
If you’re in the mood to take Julia’s advice and try some new recipes this summer, then put this Masala Hummus Toast on the list…and then put it on the list again and again and again. Not only is this one tasty, but it’s unique which means people will remember it. Enjoy!
