These Citrus Grilled Salmon Skewers are an easy and delicious way to enjoy dinner on the grill. They’re perfect for everything from backyard parties to tailgating with friends!

We’re smack in the middle of the best time of the year in upstate New York…summer! Truthfully, I love Autumn the most, but summer means grilling, hanging out with friends and outdoor activities. Winters can be long and cold in this part of the world, but summers make up for it. Laura and I are always on the lookout for fun activities with Robbie, and our calendar is seriously booked for 3 weekends out right now. 3 weekends! From air shows to county fairs to local blueberry farms, we stay on the move around here in the summer.
But my favorite summer activity? Hanging out in the backyard with friends while dinner is cooking away on the grill. Several years ago, Laura and I built our own cornhole (aka baggo, bags, sack toss) boards. (This was pre-Robbie…when we had time to tackle projects like building our own cornhole set) During the winter, those boards hang in the shed, but during the summer, they’re out pretty much all the time. This past weekend, we had friends over, and we spent the afternoon playing cornhole while Robbie helped us ‘fetch’ the beanbags. (Sometimes fetching the bean bags meant convincing him to bring them back to us. Hah!)
We’ve discovered that cornhole is way more fun when you’ve got a beer in hand, so we popped open some cold beers for our afternoon games. (Robbie ran around with a cold juice box in hand.) Have you tried Schöfferhofer Grapefruit yet? It’s a blend of authentic German hefeweizen and 100% grapefruit juice. It’s a low-alcohol beverage that’s perfect for sipping on hot summer days! (In fact, The Washington Post recently called it “the perfect summer refresher.”)
Wondering where to pick up Schöfferhofer Grapefruit near you? Check their product finder here! Schöfferhofer Grapefruit is available in 11.2-oz. bottles and cans, 16.9-oz. cans and draft. In fact, if you’re a Disney World fan, you might recognize Schöfferhofer Grapefruit as the grapefruit beer that’s served in the German Pavilion at Epcot Center’s Around the World attraction. I haven’t been to Epcot since I was a kid, but I suspect we’ll be making a trip there within the next few years once Robbie gets a bit older…and a stop by the German Pavilion will definitely be on Dad’s list!
Citrus Grilled Salmon Skewers
After several rounds of cornhole (and chasing Robbie), we settled down for dinner on the back porch. To keep the grapefruit theme going, I decided to grill up a batch of these Citrus Grilled Salmon Skewers. These skewers couldn’t be easier to make. Just cut salmon up into pieces and then brush an easy marinade on top once they go onto the grill. And since salmon grills quickly, these skewers are done in a flash! I served these Citrus Grilled Salmon Skewers over rice along with a tomato-avocado salsa, and let’s just say we didn’t have any leftovers that night. Citrus + grilled salmon is a magical combination!
Speaking of grilling, Schöfferhofer Grapefruit is hosting a sweepstakes to win a komodo-style grill or grilling accessories. Talk about how to win at summer entertaining! Plus, tailgate season is right around the corner, and a komodo-style grill would be an excellent addition to your tailgate lineup. Komodo-style grills can go from low temperature for smoking to medium temperature for grilling to high temperature for cooking pizza. Hop on over right now and enter to win…hey, you never know! (No purchase necessary.)
As we shifted from the backyard to the porch, Robbie saw me pulling out the grill, so he pulled out his own grill. He then proceeded to grill us some hot dogs, corn and a bagel. Hey, they cook bagels over open fire in Montreal, so maybe Robbie’s onto something with the grilled bagel! Of course, he also put his bottle of bubbles on his grill, so maybe I’m giving him too much credit. Once Robbie went to bed, we wrapped up the evening with some board games on the porch. And, of course, there was plenty Schöfferhofer Grapefruit to go around, too! Cheers, friends!

Citrus Grilled Salmon Skewers
For the Salmon Kabobs
- 12 10” wooden skewers
- 1½-2 lbs salmon filets cut into 1” pieces (If possible, use wild-caught salmon)
- 1 ruby red grapefruit thinly sliced
- vegetable oil for brushing grill grates
For the Marinade
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- ½ Tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp garlic minced
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2-3 Tbsp fresh grapefruit juice ~½ grapefruit
For Avocado Tomato Salsa
- 1 avocado peeled and diced
- ⅓ cup red onion diced
- 2 Roma tomatoes diced
- 1 Tbsp fresh grapefruit juice
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- cooked rice
- fresh cilantro for garnish
- Soak the wooden skewers in a bowl of water for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat (~375°F).
- Make the salsa topping by combining all of the ingredients (avocado, red onion, tomatoes, grapefruit juice, olive oil, salt and pepper) together in a small bowl; set aside.
- Next, make the marinade by whisking together olive oil, Dijon mustard, garlic, salt, pepper and grapefruit juice; set marinade aside.
- Skewer the salmon and grapefruit slices onto skewers. (Tip: Use two skewers instead of one to make it easier to flip the kabobs on the grill.)
- Brush both sides of skewers generously with the marinade mixture.
- Using vegetable oil (or grill spray), brush the grill grates generously to prevent salmon from sticking.
- Place skewers on grill and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until salmon is opaque and fully cooked.
- Serve kabobs over rice with Avocado Tomato Salsa and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro before serving.

Robbie’s grill is too cute! Do you think Cookie would like one? Obviously I’d get more use out of it than she would but buying myself a toy grill just seems weird. Salmon is my favorite fish and I love the grapefruit twist you’re adding. This sounds perfect for summer cookouts!
Yes! I think Cookie would definitely like a grill like this. I’m sure you can find one on Amazon. 🙂 That way she could cook you up some of these salmon skewers! These are seriously delicious…we’ve actually made them again for more friends since I took these photos. Thanks so much, Kelsie!
Robbie with his little play bbq! Too cute!!! Love me some salmon and loves me some grapefruit. Pairing the two? Never tried before, but bet it’s amaze balls! We’re actually having a heat warning here today so this would be lovely. Can you believe a heat warning?! I can’t! I’m off next week…the weather better be good 😉
Robbie is hilarious with the way he copies everything we do. I mean we have to be really careful now because we don’t want him picking up bad habits…but still. So the salmon skewers + grapefruit marinade are a wonderful combo, Dawn. And add in the tomato + avocado salad? It all comes together so well! In fact, we’ve made this one again since I took these photos. We were craving it! Here’s to the weather being good next week!!
This looks wonderful and I have my husband grill it when I get home. What a great idea to pair grapefruit with salmon. Your son is so cute with his barbecue.
Thank you so much, Gerlinde! Since you’re from Germany, you’re probably familiar with Schöfferhofer, right? That Schöfferhofer Grapefruit was perfect for a hot summer afternoon! And these salmon skewers are delicious. In fact, we’ve made them twice already. So easy and so tasty! Thanks so much, my friend!
These skewers look fabulous! Grapefruit pairing is such a lovely idea – and I’m going to look for the grapefruit beer!
Yes, do keep an eye out for this grapefruit beer, Mimi…it’s delicious! (Or just use the product finder link in the post.) And the skewers are perfect for summer. Easy and delicious! In fact, we’ve made these skewers twice already. Thanks so much!
Talking about grilling, I’ve noticed you haven’t been posting as many grilled food ideas this summer as I would expect from you, David! Well, maybe that’s my bad memory, or maybe those stunning cheesecakes and other desserts didn’t leave any room in my brain for remembering other recipes…but the bottom line: more recipes like this one please. Salmon and grapefruit is such a mouthwatering combination. Very nice!
Say what!? Our grill has been out 6 days a week this summer. Maybe I just haven’t been posting as many grilled recipes? Well, I’ll work on fixing that because you requested. We still have several more weeks of summer grilling left! I’ll have a grilling recipe up for you tomorrow now. 🙂 And these salmon skewers are delicious, Ben. So easy and so tasty! Thanks so much, my friend!
Hanging out in your yard for a BBQ sounds like fun! I don’t usually car for beer, but with this grapefruit twist, I just might. The skewers look so delicious, and the tiny BBQ set for your son is darling.
Come on over, Valentina! I’ll pull out the yard games and grill up some more of this salmon. 🙂 And Robbie might actually help you play yard games…haha! And of course I’ll have some of this grapefruit beer on hand. It’s really tasty, and it’s perfect for these really hot summer days that we’re having right now. Cheers, my friend!
I think this recipe will be a wonderful one.Salmon fish is always very testy and this cooking way makes it more tasty.I love this recipe.
Thank you so much, Dionne! We don’t make salmon that much around here, and I have no idea why not. Every time we make it (especially grilled), we always say “let’s do this more often”! I appreciate you stopping by and leaving a comment!
I played cornhole for the first time last summer! I must say I did really well – okay, my partner did really well and we made it to the finals! 🙂 Tons of fun. Summertime is a great time for games and grilling. These salmon skewers look amazing and would make everyone a winner!
Wow, the finals?! Impressive, Kathy! Now you know what that means, right? You need to go build a cornhole set for your backyard. 🙂 It really is a fun summer yard game, and it’s great to pull out the cornhole set when you’re hanging out with friends!
Haha – Oh Robbie might just be onto something – grilled bubbles just might be the next big thing, I mean, we do have raindrop cake after all! 🙂 Btw that picture of Robbie and his grill made me smile! You and Laura did good, or like they say here in the south “done did good,” that chap is one adorable boy!
Y’all sure do stay busy up there – best way to enjoy Robbie and these summer days! And, speaking of summer, I don’t think I’ve tried Schöfferhofer Grapefruit – I need to check out that product locator page as this sounds so refreshing – and, speaking of refreshing, dude, these salmon skewers are making me drool! We love salmon here and have it way too often, next time am gonna have to try skewering it!
Hah! Grilled bubbles. I’ll let you know how those taste. 😉 And thank you so much for the kind words, Shashi. We done did good! (On a side note, that just makes me miss the south even more…)
These salmon skewers are surprisingly easy, and they’re absolutely delicious! In fact, we made these exact skewers 2 weekends in a row for friends. (Different friends each weekend though…because that would’ve been strange to invite the same friends over for the same meal again. Hah!) And both times we had Schöfferhofer Grapefruit. It really is a delicious, low-alcohol beer. Perfect for summer entertaining or tailgating! Thanks so much, my friend!
