Robbie: “Right here?”
Me: “Yes, that one.”
Me (in my head): *Please don’t hammer my finger. Please don’t hammer my finger.*
On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot hosts a Kids’ Workshop. They supply the tools and a different building kit each month. One of my curling teammates told me about these workshops a couple of years ago, and we’ve been going ever since. Robbie loves his “building days”! Home Depot even gave him an apron to wear as well as a new pin to add for each of the workshops. He enjoys putting that apron on and showing us his pins. Of course, in true toddler fashion, he didn’t want to put his apron on when I was actually taking pictures.
This past workshop was constructing a spring garden craft, and Robbie now has his “art” hanging in his room. And Dad managed to escape without getting his finger hammered. It was a win-win for everyone!
I enjoy taking Robbie to the Kids’ Workshops as it gives me an excuse to go wander around the grilling section once we’re done. This past time, I stopped and drooled over some new grills. You guys know how much I love to smoke foods, so I was picking up another bag of mesquite-flavored wood chunks. That’s when I looked down and noticed the new Kingsford Hardwood Charcoal Briquettes. This charcoal is made from all natural American hardwood, and you can actually see pieces of the hardwood in the briquettes themselves. Kinda cool, huh? Needless to say, a bag of this charcoal landed in my cart.
One of the coolest things (aside from the taste) about Kingsford’s Hardwood Charcoal Briquettes is the fact that they create higher heat, so they’re perfect for searing steaks, chops or (in this case) salmon. And because of the hardwood, these briquettes produce a low amount of ash which makes them perfect for smokers and ceramic grills.
Laura had mentioned grilling salmon the other day, and I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to try out these briquettes. The grilled flavor was out of sight good! We actually had leftovers (a rare event when the grill is out), and we heated ’em up for lunch the next day. That Grilled Honey Lime Salmon tasted like it had just come off the grill!
Grilled Honey Lime Salmon
Since I knew I’d have the grill heated up, I decided to add an assortment of veggies in there with the salmon. Have you ever grilled onions? They’re amazing! Just cut an onion in half, brush it with a bit of olive oil and toss it on the grill alongside the main course. Trust me when I say you will be rewarded with flavor! In addition to those grilled onions, I also added some sliced eggplant, yellow squash and tomatoes with the Grilled Honey Lime Salmon. Serve all of that over a bed of rice, and you’ve got an easy grilled dinner that’ll become a family favorite for sure!
Sometime this week, swing by Home Depot and pick up a bag of Kingsford Hardwood Charcoal Briquettes. Then put this Grilled Honey Lime Salmon on the menu this weekend! Heck, this would actually be a great recipe to serve family and friends on Memorial Day this year. The flavor is amazing, and the recipe comes together quite easily. Sign me up for easy, tasty grilled recipes! As for me, I’m already looking forward to next month’s Kids’ Workshop when I can help Robbie with his project…and then wander through Home Depot’s grilling section!

Ingredients
For the Grilled Salmon
- ¼ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup lime juice ~2 limes
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2 tsp minced garlic
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 4 6-oz. salmon fillets
For the Grilled Vegetables
- 1 medium eggplant cut lengthwise into 4 thick slices
- 1 medium yellow squash halved lengthwise
- 1 medium red onion halved
- 2 Tbsp olive oil divided
- 1½ tsp salt divided
- 1½ tsp dried dill divided
- 4 medium tomatoes halved
For Serving
- Cooked rice
- {optional} green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Using a glass baking dish, whisk together olive oil, lime juice, honey, soy sauce, garlic and pepper. Add salmon fillets skin side up. Cover and refrigerate for 15-45 minutes.
- Using Kingsford Hardwood Charcoal Briquettes, stack briquettes in a pyramid. Add lighter fluid per the package instructions. Light charcoal and let burn until they begin to ash over (~15 minutes). Spread briquettes into a single layer. (If your grill has a thermometer, aim for ~350°-375°F.)
- Brush eggplant, squash and red onions with 1 Tbsp of olive oil. Sprinkle tops of veggies with 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp dried dill.
- In a separate bowl, toss tomatoes with ½ Tbsp olive oil, ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp dried dill. Set tomatoes aside.
- Remove salmon from marinade and place grill flesh-side down on one side of the grill; discard any excess marinade. Grill for 7-8 minutes, flip and continue grilling for 3-4 minutes or until salmon is opaque and fully cooked.
- Meanwhile, place eggplant, squash and onion cut-sides down on other side of grill. Grill for 8-9 minutes, turning occasionally. Transfer veggies into a bowl; set aside. (Tip: The timing lines up perfectly if remove eggplant, squash and onion from the grill when you flip the salmon. Go ahead and add tomatoes to the grill.)
- Place tomatoes on grill cut-side down and continue grilling for 3-4 minutes.
- Remove tomatoes and salmon from grill and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Chop grilled eggplant, squash, red onions and tomatoes into small pieces.
- Serve grilled salmon and veggies over cooked rice.
- {Optional} Garnish with freshly chopped green onions before serving.
Bring on the grilling season! I could grill, or have my husband grill, all year long! This grilled salmon sounds delicious! I used to love the building workshops at Home Depot! My kids are too old for it now, but they do love to still tinker around and make things!
Oh, I totally hear ya, Kathy! I could grill all year long, too. The only thing that slows me down a bit is when it snows more than 8″ or so. Then it’s just a downright pain to get to the grill! But then again, that’s what snow shovels are for, right? 🙂
You know, I wonder if those Home Depot workshops are part of the reason why your kids still tinker today. I’m hoping Robbie actually picks something up from the workshops! If nothing else, they’re a great excuse for me to go wander the grilling section. Haha. Thanks so much, my friend!
Man, those images of you and Robbie brought back memories of me teaching my son how to drive a nail. Painful as I recall. Took him forever to quite closing his eyes when he hammered.
Home Depot was my hangout when we lived in the US. It was just across from a Buffalo Wild Wings so I could make a Saturday out of it. Kingsford charcoal was my choice as well.
Now let’s talk grilled salmon. Look cooked to perfection to me and your honey-lime marinade will be replicated soon.
Hah! As frustrating as those days are, they still create great memories. Robbie is growing up so fast! In fact, I sometimes forget to stop and take pictures. I love these photos from our last Home Depot trip!
Now you’re talking with the Home Depot + Buffalo Wild Wings and then perhaps some Kingsford grilling that night? 🙂 Definitely try this marinade! I love how much flavor it brought to the recipe. And definitely put onions on the grill – they’re delicious! Thanks, Ron!
Those Home Depot workshops sound so cool! I remember “helping” my dad build a new fence when I was a kid and I was so impressed that it only took him one or two raps of the hammer to get the nails in; it took me 30 to 40. Still does actually–I’m not handy. Robbie is probably already better with a hammer than I am! As for this salmon, it’s my very favorite fish and I’m always looking for new ways to enjoy it. Definitely trying this one!
Hey, slow and steady wins the race, Kelsie! It might take you (and Robbie) 30-40 raps of the hammer, but you’ll both get there eventually! I highly recommend this grilled salmon…it’s delicious! But make sure you add plenty of veggies to the grill, too. The veggies soak up all that yummy charcoal flavor. This recipe tastes like summer on a plate! 🙂 Thanks so much, my friend!
Aww, those photos of you and Robbie are so cute!! What a lovely bonding time.
Grilling food is the best – it adds such flavour! I bet the honey and lime work so well with the salmon.
Thanks so much, Alexandra! You know, sometimes I forget to stop and actually take pics with me and Robbie. I’ll snap photos of him doing silly stuff, but I forget to actually get in the photo myself. I love these pictures!
I’m right there with ya on the grilled food. I absolutely love grilling, and we spend a lot of time in the backyard in the warmer months! Thanks so much for the comment, my friend!
Ah, beautiful salmon. I love all of your sweets, but I just pass them by because we don’t tend to eat them. Well, maybe the truth is that if and when I make something, my husband and I fight over the leftovers. It’s not pretty. Love the pics of you and your kiddo!
Hahaha! I totally know what you mean about sweets, Mimi. I love to bake, so I do come up with quite a few sweets…but we usually take them in to Laura’s coworkers or my teammates at the curling club. This salmon, though? It stayed here! 🙂 Thanks for the kind words, my friend!
Another grilled recipe!
This grilled Salmon looks damn good with Honey and Lime combination. Also, loved the way you’ve captured the cooking process. Beautifully done!
And Robbie looks so happy with his Dad. I’m sure you guys had a great time at the workshop.
Yes! As soon as the weather turns warm enough (which is basically as soon as the snow melts), I’m out there at the grill. I love being outdoors, and the flavor of grilled food is so good! 🙂
Thank you so much for the kind words, Harshad! Robbie loves helping out, so the workshops (as well as cooking in the backyard) are great opportunities to spend time together. I hope your week is going well, my friend!
Hi David! What a great kick off to summer! I can actually buy that charcoal at my local grocery and have a bag out in the carport. I love grilling sweet onions and all other vegetables, so good! Great pictures of you and Robbie! Enjoy all those dad bonding times!
Yes! I am SO ready to kickoff this summer, Dorothy. It’s been a long, cold winter (longer than normal), and I’m about ready to spend time outdoors at the grill. We had a great day when I took these photos, but then we’ve been cold and rainy all week. Hopefully the sun decides to finally peek out from behind the clouds here soon!
I’m with ya on grilling onions, too. They soak up that grilled flavor, and they’re a delicious addition to so many recipes! Cheers to a good end of the week and weekend, my friend! 🙂
this sounds delicious david. we do love salmon in this household:) always good to throw cut halves of a lemon on the grill too. gives such a great flavour; and you just squeeze them over the fish. i hope those briquettes are from sustainable forests/plantations? i couldn’t see anything on their website about where the wood comes from…. cheers sherry
Ah, I like that idea of putting lemon halves on the grill, Sherry! I’ll have to do that next time for sure. (That’ll likely be this weekend since the weather is lookin’ good.)
That’s a great question about the sustainability of the forests. I’m going to assume that the briquettes do come from a sustainable program as there’s only so much forest to go around. I don’t know for sure, though. I’ll see what I can do to track down more info on that front! Thanks so much, my friend! I appreciate your thoughtful comments. 🙂
I didn’t realize that you’re a charcoal bbq guy! Me too! I have a grill very similar to yours. I wish it were full of meat like yours is. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet this spring.
I’m an “any and all” kinda guy when it comes to bbq, Jeff! I seriously just love to grill. Any as far as your grill not being full of meat…I think I know how to fix that. Hopefully the weather is lookin’ good for you this weekend. It’s been cold and rainy here all week, but the weekend should be good grillin’ weather here for us! Cheers, my friend!
First, the “building day” at Home Depot. Amazing! I wish I’d known about this when my boys were younger (if it existed then). Such a cool idea, and the two of you look like you’re having so much fun.
The salmon sounds and looks delicious, and yes to the grilled onions. Honey and lime is a fantastic combination. The absolute best!
I’m so glad we discovered these kids workshops at Home Depot! Robbie loves them, and he proudly wears his apron with all of the pins from each workshop. (The only time he won’t wear it is when I want to take a picture of him…figures!)
Also, this salmon. Delicious! The grilled flavor really shines through, and I love putting loads of veggies on the grill alongside the salmon. It makes for a fun plate with all of the different flavors and textures. Thanks so much, Valentina!
Those workshops are such a fun idea and I love Robbie’s big smile!
The combination of honey and lime is perfect for salmon. So excited for grilling season!! Will definitely be trying this recipe!
Oh, Robbie loves those workshops! He’s always asking me what the next “Home Depot craft” is going to be. 🙂
Also, this salmon. It’s delicious! It’s packed with so much grilled flavor. It really is an excellent recipe for summer entertaining in the backyard! Thanks so much, Marissa!
Lil S used to LOVE those Home Depot workshops too – wow – it’s been awhile since we used to go and your post sent me down memory lane. These days Lil S and I wander around the aisles of Home Depot too – but usually to peruse them to get inspiration for our next project – which is to add a tiled kitchen backslash – our new place doesn’t have one – yet! 🙂
BTW – Robbie is growing so fast and gosh that’s one adorable chap. You and Laura done did good (like they sometimes say here in the South)
Also – salmon is a fav with us – we eat it more than any other meat – and this is epic – love the Thai-like flavors you have, David – and LOVE all those grilled veggies too!
Happy weekend, my upstate NY friend!
Aww, I’m so glad I could take you down memory lane there a bit, Shashi. I’m sure I will be the same way once Robbie gets a little older! Also, I totally understand your point about wandering the Home Depot aisles looking for inspiration. I’m thinking a kitchen backsplash sounds like a great weekend project! 🙂
I totally know what you mean when you say “done did good.” In fact, that made me miss the South a little bit. Haha!
This salmon really is delicious, and I love all of the grilled flavor in there. The Kingsford charcoal is a new favorite for when I get out the charcoal grill now! 🙂 Thanks so much, my friend!
Love it and will try soon.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy this one as much as we do, Naveen!
I’m drooling over these BBQ pictures David and your honey lime salmon. I’ve not BBQ’d salmon before so this would be a great recipe for me to give them a go. I just need to get the opportunity to BBQ now. Ha ha! I’d planned to yesterday but it rained. Such is the reliability of the weather here!
You should totally try your hand at salmon on the grill, Neil! It cooks quickly, and the grill flavor really shines through. Plus, you can load up the rest of the grill with veggies. Serve it all over rice or pasta, and you’ve got an awesome meal right there! I’m hoping the rain slows down for you over there. We’ve got a thunderstormy day here ourselves today…no grilling tonight for us. Ugh.
LOL!! I’d be thinking the same thing! Lucky for you and those fingers!!! What a fun thing for you guys to do and Robbie looks so cute, as always! I don’t often think about grilling salmon, but by the looks of this, I have to! It looks super tasty and just another reason to get outside. I just have to wait for the weather to turn warm. It’s been raining this weekend with more in the coming days. When it warms up, I’ll be giving this salmon a try! YUM! Hope you guys are having a lovely weekend 🙂
Oh man, I somehow escaped with all of my fingers in tact…but there were a couple moments where I was afraid Robbie’s aim might be a bit off. Haha! Salmon on the grill is absolutely delicious. You should totally plan on doing it soon, Dawn! And you’re right about just another excuse to get outdoors. After this past winter, I’ve been looking for any and all excuses to get outside. 🙂 We’ve had a TON of rain here lately, too…I get it. Hopefully it clears out soon so we don’t have to dodge thunderstorms when we grill. Haha! Hope you have a very happy Monday, my friend!
David – I love grilling season almost as much as I love salmon season! This salmon looks gorgeous and that honey-lime sounds positively mouth-watering! Salmon Season just opened here with the arrival of the coveted Copper River Salmon. The king salmon can be had for $50/lb. (no kidding), or $40/lb for the coho. Crazy. But it is amazing! Hoping the demand goes down a bit over the next week or two – it’s only a 3-week season for the Copper River. Anyway, it would be delicious with some honey-lime glaze. Yummm!
Ah, I forget that you are in the middle of salmon country out there, Laura! I’ve heard about Copper River Salmon, but I’ve never seen it available around here. Maybe I just need to look a little harder. Of course, if it’s $50/lb in your area, I’m scared to see what it might be all the way over here! Either way, this honey-lime marinade + the grill flavor makes this salmon super tasty! 🙂 Thanks so much, my friend!
Hi David,
Beyond hungry, of course, do you know what your posts make me feel? Happy! What happens if i leave out olive oil?
Thank you so much for the kind words! I haven’t tried this recipe without the olive oil. I do know the olive oil helps the salmon retain moisture on the grill. I’d be afraid that the salmon might dry out without the olive oil…but I can’t say for sure since I haven’t tried it. If you try it out, let me know! Happy grilling! 🙂
I hallucinated the delicious smell of grilled salmon and now I’m salivating! I found your blog through Lost in a Pot and I have to say I love it! Such great photos. Thanks for sharing!
Hey there, Chava! Thank you so much for stopping by. You landed on a good post, too…the grilled flavor in this salmon + veggies is amazing! I just wish they made scratch and sniff computer monitors. 🙂 I look forward to getting to know you out here on the interwebs!
