This Avocado Club Flatbread is a cross between guacamole, avocado toast and a California club sandwich - and it's delicious!I’ve been a sandwich guy for pretty much as long as I can remember.  I’m not talking squished peanut butter sandwiches in the school lunchbox here.  I’m talking those “fancy” sandwiches with sprouts and gourmet mustards and bacon…mmm, bacon!  In fact, I can name my favorite sandwich cafes in every city where I’ve lived.  (I can also name my favorite donut shops in every city where I’ve lived.  Apparently I like sandwiches and donuts.)

This Avocado Club Flatbread is a cross between guacamole, avocado toast and a California club sandwich - and it's delicious!A good club sandwich has always been one of my favorites.  It’s hard to mess up a club sandwich.  I’m pretty sure I survived my sophomore year of college thanks to the club sandwich.  I lived in a dorm that was pretty far off the beaten path, and there was a little café downstairs that served a limited dinner menu.  My favorite item?  The club sandwich.  And a side of french fries, of course.  That might’ve been years ago now, but I can still remember the taste of that club sandwich.  Is that strange?  (It’s not because it was a notable sandwich, but rather it’s because I must’ve eaten a hundred of ’em!)

This Avocado Club Flatbread recipe was inspired by the classic club sandwich.  However, I wanted to put a fun spin on it, and we happened to have extra pita bread in the freezer.  A traditional California club sandwich features sliced avocados, tomatoes, bacon and turkey.  I used the same ingredients here for this Avocado Club Flatbread, but I reimagined the concept a bit so that it would work for a flatbread.

This Avocado Club Flatbread is a cross between guacamole, avocado toast and a California club sandwich - and it's delicious!Instead of sliced avocados, I mashed those avocados up with some cilantro and seasonings.  I stopped short of making guacamole as I didn’t want the avocado mixture to overpower the rest of the flatbread.  However, next time I make these flatbreads?  I could see using guacamole as the base.  You could actually say that this Avocado Club Flatbread is a cross between guacamole + avocado toast + California club sandwich.  Whatever it is, I call it delicious!

This Avocado Club Flatbread is a cross between guacamole, avocado toast and a California club sandwich - and it's delicious!I hope you enjoy this Avocado Club Flatbread recipe as much as we did – it’s a really fun way to reimagine a classic sandwich.  Plus, you can’t ever go wrong with bacon!  (In fact, you might want to double the amount of bacon in this recipe – you know, just in case some disappears on the way from the pan to the flatbreads.)  Cheers!

Instructions

For the Avocado

  • Using a small bowl, add the avocados, cilantro, lime juice, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper; mash with a fork until somewhat smooth.

For the Flatbread

  • Preheat oven or grill to 375°F.
  • Brush the flatbreads with olive oil. Bake flatbreads directly on oven rack for 6-8 minutes, or until edges are slightly crispy. (Note: If grilling the flatbreads, then will likely cook a bit faster. Keep a close eye on them to prevent them from burning.)
  • Remove flatbreads from oven and spread avocado mixture evenly on top.
  • Top flatbreads with sliced turkey, cooked bacon and cherry tomatoes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

  1. cant wait to make this soon for me for the flatbread can i use mushrooms and tofu instead i never had avocado club flatbread before perfect for my after office meals love your recipes as always brightens up my day everyday after work

    1. Yes! I think you could absolutely use tofu and mushrooms here, Ramya – just be sure to season them both well before adding them to the flatbreads. This is a fun recipe, and flatbreads offer a lot of flexibility in terms of toppings!

  2. Give me some bread, vegetables, and fruits (Well and also cheese. And LOTS of ice cream, obviously), and I can 100% leave on it all summer long. That’s why this flatbread makes me happy. And of course, I don’t mind the addition of turkey and bacon 🙂

    1. Haha – I’m pretty much in the same boat, Ben. Bread, cheese, fruit and ice cream. Ok, veggies are probably important, too. 🙂 And bacon. Lots of bacon.

  3. 5 stars
I adore a good flatbread and you’re speaking my language with this one, David! My husband and I both love club sandwiches and this is such a fun way to enjoy one. I also love that this is more about the toppings than the bread, because some club sandwiches have too much bread, IMO.

    1. Club sandwiches have always been a favorite of mine! If we go out to lunch and there’s a club sandwich on the menu, chances are I’ll be ordering it! This was a fun way to reimagine all of those flavors in a flatbread format. 🙂 Thanks, Marissa!

  4. this sounds so very delicious david! even tho we are not eating any pig products – if we can help it. Tho come to think of it, i am making a scone recipe for the blog which has bacon… I adore club sangers!

    1. I totally understand, Sherry – bacon is delicious, but I absolutely respect different strokes for different folks. 🙂 We had fun taking this classic sandwich and turning it into flatbread form!
