It doesn’t get much more comforting than this. Creamy chicken alfredo pasta…cooked in a slow cooker! This recipe is extremely easy – it’s basically the savory version of a dump cake. And the flavor? Out of this world!

Pasta coated in a creamy sauce has long been one of my guilty pleasures. Don’t get me wrong – I love a classic red sauce – think Spaghetti & Meatballs. Or if I’ve got a craving for something spicy, this Arrabbiata sauce is fantastic. But if I’m going to cheat and go all-in, then alfredo sauce is near the top of the list. And an alfredo sauce that’s made in a crock pot? Yes, please!

Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo

This Slow Cooker Chicken Alfredo recipe is about as classic (and simple) as possible. It relies on heavy cream and a block of cream cheese for the creamy factor. Italian seasonings, garlic and Parmesan cheese bring the flavor. The chicken is a nice addition, but in truth it is an optional ingredient. A slow cooker alfredo sauce would be delicious in its own right.

I’ve always heard to avoid putting dairy (milk, cream, yogurt, etc.) in a slow cooker as they can curdle. That’s why I was particularly intrigued by the idea of putting both heavy cream and cream cheese in this alfredo recipe. It doesn’t curdle at all. Not a bit. It’s creamy, cheesy and delicious in the best way possible! If it was socially acceptable, I’d probably eat this one straight out of the slow cooker.

The authentic Italian way to make alfredo sauce is with just butter, Parmesan cheese and fettuccine. (Alfredo sauce was invented by a Roman named…you guessed it, Alfredo.) While this slow cooker version channels the same flavors, it is certainly more American in style thanks to the addition of cream…and garlic…and cream cheese…and seasonings. That’s all good, though. The taste is amazing, and it’ll leave you craving another bowl!

To make this crockpot chicken alfredo recipe, the first step is to cook the chicken breasts for 2 hours, or until fully cooked. At this point, you’ll shred the chicken with a fork and return it to the slow cooker. (You could chop the chicken into small cubes if you prefer.) Add in the pasta and Parmesan cheese, and let it go for another 30-45 minutes. Dinner is done!

You will want to keep a close eye on that pasta to prevent it from overcooking. Different brands of slow cookers might cook at slightly different temperatures, and this will affect the pasta timing. Similarly, I suspect different brands of pasta might cook in different times, too. The short of it is to just pay attention. You want that pasta to be al dente rather than overcooked and mushy. For us, the pasta is perfect at 40 minutes.

How to Store Leftovers

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, simply place in a dry skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

Additions

We kept this version pretty classic, but there are some easy ways to mix this one up a bit. Add some chopped broccoli florets or a couple handfuls of peas or fresh spinach along with the pasta. Or perhaps mix up the pasta shape. We used ziti, but I could see noodles working well here, too. If you like spicy, add ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes in at the beginning. Have fun cooking!

If you’re looking for an easy and delicious comfort food recipe, then put this one on the list. Alfredo sauce is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, and this one was creamy and delicious in the best way possible. Enjoy!

    1. Hey Ramya! The tofu should be a good substitution here, although you may need to adjust the cooking time slightly – I’m not sure on that front! I haven’t tried coconut cream in this recipe, so I’m not sure how it would work. I say give it a try – that’s the fun part about cooking! Try different things and see what works…you might find a new favorite recipe along the way!

    1. I’m all about some easy comfort food no matter what time of the year it is – but then once the weather turns cold? Bring it on! Thanks, Michelle!

  4. I love and tend to cook the Italian version of Alfredo sauce more often – for the simplicity of its flavour profile and lightness. But I admit an American spin can also be good, especially on a super cold/gloomy/dark/wet day (which is probably around 50-75% of our winter lol) when something extra special is required 🙂

    1. I do totally get where you’re coming from with the Italian alfredo sauce. It’s delicious! The American version is definitely a bit different, but it’s got all of the delicious comfort food feelings for chilly winter days…and it’s easy to make in a slow cooker! 🙂
