Who’s watching you? Is it ghosts and goblins? If you’re lucky, it’s these Chocolate Mummy Cupcakes!
Boo! With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to turn our attention to the spooky and the creepy. I seriously love this stuff! Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. It’s the unofficial start of the holiday season. (Santa is finishing up his sled repairs as we speak!) Halloween is also a great excuse to dress up in a fun costume.
Robbie is still a little too young to understand Halloween, but I’m thinking we’ll need some father + son partner costumes in the future. Say maybe Dr. Evil and Mini-Me (à la Austin Powers)? Thing 1 and Thing 2 (à la Cat in the Hat) would be easy options. Or maybe I can convince Laura to dress as Morticia, and we can all be the Addams Family. Like I said, I really get into Halloween!
But one of the things I don’t love about Halloween? Spooky movies. I’m all about a good suspense movie or even a scary cartoon. But horror movies? No thank you, very much. I tried to watch Scream the other day in the middle of the afternoon. I got creeped out and had to turn the channel. Scream! We’re not even talking the modern horror movies with much improved special effects. We’re talking old school horror movies. And I still couldn’t do it.
We have a large backyard bordered by a bunch of trees in the back of our property. It’s super quiet in the neighborhood, and it’s also nice and dark. In fact, that’s one of the things that really drew us to this house. Every night before bed, I step out on the back porch with the dogs while they do their business. No big deal. But if I’ve seen anything even remotely scary on tv, then I totally get freaked out. The trees out back start looking at me all funny-like. And then I start to hear strange noises. In reality, I know there’s nothing there…but that doesn’t keep me from running upstairs quickly once I turn the backyard lights out. (It’s the same as when I was a little kid and the monster under the basement stairs would try to grab my feet!)
While I might be afraid of the trees looking at me at night, I certainly don’t mind these Chocolate Mummy Cupcakes looking at me. Heck, these guys can look at me all they want. 9am…7pm…3am…it doesn’t matter to me. I won’t complain one bit about a Chocolate Mummy Cupcake as a midnight snack!
I actually had a blast making these cupcakes. (What can I say? I love to bake!) They’re essentially chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting, but I made a batch of marshmallow fondant to use for the “mummy strips.” Marshmallow fondant is a fun way to decorate cakes and cupcakes…and it tastes way better than traditional fondant.
This marshmallow fondant does dry out fairly quickly, but you can always mix a bit more shortening in if needed. These Chocolate Mummy Cupcakes would also be a fun project for the kids to decorate. Just cut the fondant strips for them and let them decorate their own cupcakes. Drop a couple of candy eyes in there, and you’ve got one spooky (and delicious) Halloween treat! Enjoy!
