Celebrate Autumn with a visit to a nearby apple orchard and a homemade batch of these Chocolate Dipped Apples!
Robbie and I went on a backyard hunt recently. A quest really. We didn’t find a Heffalump, but we did find some good-looking sticks. We had actually set out to find sticks, so our mission was a success! I had decided it was time to make some chocolate-covered apples, and I really like using sticks from the yard instead of popsicle sticks. The rustic look just adds to the Autumn vibe here, right? Back inside, I washed those sticks and dried them in the oven on a low temperature so they’d be ready for the apples. I can’t have any yard bugs taking a nibble out of my chocolate dipped apples before I get to ’em!
I’m not sure Robbie grasped the purpose of our quest, though, as he was determined to find the biggest stick possible. As we made our way back to the house, Dad was carrying a dozen or so small sticks and Robbie was carrying one stick that was taller than him. As fun as that sounds, I’m pretty sure that would’ve been a big fail when it came time to make our chocolate dipped apples.
We actually have a couple of apple trees growing in our backyard, but I used apples from a nearby orchard to make these Fall treats. (Our yard apples never look quite as nice as the ones from the orchards…imagine that!) All of the nearby apple orchards are actually one of my favorite things about upstate New York. I’d guess there are a dozen large orchards within 30 minutes of our house. And a trip to the orchard always means an apple cider doughnut, too! An apple (doughnut) a day keeps the doctor away, right? Hah!
Chocolate Dipped Apples
Over the years, I’ve made Caramel Apples and Candy Apples, and now I can add Chocolate Dipped Apples to that list. I decided to add some shredded coconut and chopped pecans to these chocolate dipped apples, too…after all, the add-ins are the best part! Truthfully, I meant to toast the coconut before dipping the apples in, but I forgot. I was standing there with an apple coated in melted chocolate when I realized that my shredded coconut wasn’t toasted yet. Oops. So I just went with it…and I’m kinda glad I did. The untoasted coconut made these chocolate dipped apples taste like a candy bar. Delicious!
These chocolate dipped apples are surprisingly easy to make, and they are fun afternoon snacks or evening desserts. We actually sliced these apples up and ate them as a somewhat-healthy dessert. Keyword: somewhat. I’m normally not a chocolate + fruit kinda guy, but the game changes when it comes to juicy Fall apples. So grab some apples at the store (or a nearby orchard) and dip ’em in chocolate. But make sure to have all sorts of fun add-ins ready for dipping! Cheers, friends!
