Freshly baked bread that only takes about 5 minutes to mix together? I’m listening! Baking bread is one of my all-time favorite kitchen activities. Whether it’s a yeast bread that needs to rise or an easy quick bread, there is just something magical about that first bite of homemade bread!

This Cheesy Beer Bread is one of the easiest bread recipes you’ll ever find. 5 minutes. That’s all it takes to mix up the batter and get this bread into the oven. 10 minutes if you include cleaning the mixing bowl, too. 45 minutes later you’ll be pulling out a beautiful golden loaf of bread from the oven.

Oh, and your house will smell amazing, too. You’ve probably heard the advice to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies before an open house, right? Well, a study out of the UK suggests that the smell of freshly baked bread is actually at the top of the list. Other favorite smells on the list include fresh linen, coffee and vanilla.

Cheesy Beer Bread

One of my favorite things about this bread recipe (aside from it’s ease) is the fact that I always have the ingredients on hand. Want a freshly baked loaf of bread for dinner tonight? No problem! Give me 45 minutes, and it’ll be ready!

A mixture of pantry staples (flour, sugar, baking powder and salt) combined with cheddar cheese and a can of beer is all you need. We always keep extra bars of Cabot’s Seriously Sharp cheddar cheese on hand, and we typically have some sort of beer that will work in this recipe.

The only ingredient we may or may not have around is fresh parsley. But we’ve made this recipe using dried parsley in the past. It works just as well! (The fresh parsley tastes just a little bit better, but the dried version still comes in at a close second.) Don’t have dried parsley in the pantry? Any dried herbs will work. Dried oregano or a mix of dried Italian seasonings are both great choices.

Best Type of Beer for Beer Bread

When it comes to drinking beer, we typically prefer stouts or IPA’s – basically anything with a strong, robust flavor. However, when it comes to baking with beer, lighter beers like ales or pilsners are the best choice. Hoppy beers (like IPAs) are not recommended as they can easily overpower the flavors in the bread.

Variations

The base recipe for this beer bread is great! You can easily change a few ingredients to get an entirely different flavor in the bread.

  • Cheese. Cheddar cheese is great in this bread, but what about a spicy version? A Pepper Jack or even a habanero cheddar beer bread would be delicious!
  • Herbs. Mix up the herbs for an entirely different flavor! Dill, basil and oregano would all be good options. (I’d recommend ~1 tablespoon total of chopped fresh herbs.)
  • Seasonings. Toss a couple of teaspoons of your favorite seasoning blend into the batter. Taco seasoning and Pepper Jack cheese? Sounds like a great combination!

Leftovers

Leftover beer bread should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. This bread tastes best when freshly baked, but it’s also pretty tasty if you butter a slice and toast it in the oven!

This Cheesy Beer Bread can also be frozen. Just wrap the cooled loaf in plastic wrap, put it in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Just let the bread thaw at room temperature for a couple of hours before serving. (Again, toasting it up with a bit of butter is how we like to serve leftover slices!)

If you’re looking for an easy and tasty beer bread recipe, put this Cheddar Beer Bread recipe on the list. Slices of this bread would be great with any meal, but they’re a particularly good side dish for soups and chili. Happy baking!

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Spray a 9”x5” loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray; set pan aside.
  • Using a large mixing bowl, add the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; stir until well combined.
  • Add 1¼ cups of cheddar cheese; stir until well combined.
  • Add beer; stir until well combined.
  • Transfer batter into prepared loaf pan.
  • Brush half of the melted butter (2 Tbsp) and sprinkle remaining cheese (¼ cup) evenly on top of the batter.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until top of bread is golden brown.
  • Using a small bowl, whisk together the remaining melted butter (2 Tbsp), garlic powder and parsley.
  • While bread is still hot from oven, brush the butter mixture evenly on top.
  • Let bread cool for 10 minutes in pan before transferring to a wire rack until completely cool.

Notes

For beer bread, I recommend using a lighter beer like ales or pilsner. Hoppy beers (like IPAs) are not recommended as they tend to overshadow the flavors in the bread.
