Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake

Whip up this retro Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake for Father’s Day this year!

Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake: PERFECT FOR FATHER'S DAY!I’m a child of the 80′s, and I absolutely love some 80′s rock.  In fact, whenever I’m in the kitchen, I’m usually channeling my inner Steve Perry and rockin’ out to some Journey classics.  (I even have a 80′s rocker wig…but that’s a story for another time.)  But when I hear my Dad talk about growing up in the late 1950′s and early 1960′s, I wonder what growing up in that era was like.  I remember sitting down with my Dad a number of years ago to watch American Graffiti.  It’s a classic film about cars, cruisin’, rock and roll, sock hops, and of-course drive-ins.  So, in honor of Father’s Day this year, I created this Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake.

Back in the late 50′s, the local drive-in was the place to see and be seen every weekend.  My Dad tells stories about the local drive-in where he grew up in Palestine, Texas.  To be honest, it sounds like that was a really cool time to be a kid.  Following in the footsteps of the great radio DJ Wolfman Jack, my father tells of the days when he was a DJ at a local radio station.  He was Wild Man Dave.  Seriously?  My Dad went by the name Wild Man Dave?  I sometimes question whether he’s making the whole thing up…but he has too many details to be lying about it.  We’ve even driven by the old malt shop in Palestine, Texas.  I’ve seen it.  Of course, now it’s a creepy looking donut shop that appears to only be open 1 hour a week…but you can tell just from the building that it used to be one funky place to hang.

Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake: PERFECT FOR FATHER'S DAY!The local drive-in was the hub of all teenager activity in this era, and what’s a drive-in without a Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake??  This milkshake is incredibly easy to make, too!  The not-so-secret ingredient?  Malt powder.  Malt powder is a pretty common ingredient, and you should be able to find it in most markets.  If it’s not in the baking section, check the breakfast drinks aisle…I found mine next to the Ovaltine.  So this year, surprise Dad with a retro treat that’ll remind him of the good old days.  Even if he didn’t grow up in the 50′s, I can assure you that he won’t turn down this delicious Classic Chocolate Malted Milkshake!  Oh, and be sure to call him “Daddy-O” when you hand him the shake.

To really get on Dad’s good side this year, make him a milkshake duo with this Peanut Butter + Brownie Chunk Milkshake that I whipped up last year!

Comments

  1. I pretty much love anything chocolate and a chocolate malted milkshake sounds awesome. Great tribute to your Dad :D

  2. Looks delicious! I love hearing stories from my dad about what life was like when he was a kid/teenager.

    • Me, too, Laura! Sometimes it’s a little strange to hear the stories…but it would have been cool to see what life was like back then.

  3. This is different #wolfpackeats! I am an avid lover of milkshakes… this one looks legit! Pinning!

  4. correction… definitely, not different. #wolfpacktypo

  5. Ohmigerrrd, that looks good! It also reminds me that of the many things that you and I DO have in common, there’s one BIG difference (well, besides our gender…lol). I’m probably old enough to be your mom! SO, now that we’ve established that I’m older than dirt, can I have one of those milkshakes, please? I used to get one very much like that from Woolworth drug store for $.25 :)

    • Oh man, Woolworth!! There was an old Woolworth store in downtown Charleston, SC where I grew up. It still had the milkshake counter and everything in it. My sister and I would occasionally ride our bikes up there and wander around the store. Geez…thanks for the memories…that’s awesome! And I don’t think you’re old as dirt…just for the record! :-)

  6. You have a rocker wig? Like legit? Or did you buy it Halloween? In the first case I want to know all about it. OK?
As to the milkshake, sometimes nothing beats the classics, and this is a total winner!

    • I wish it was a legit rocker wig…sadly, it’s a Halloween version. It’s still a rocker wig, but it hasn’t been worn on stage. Yet. My plans are to fix that soon. :-) (After all, I am going to the Journey concert in Saratoga this weekend…)
