Ingredients
16ouncespastapenne, ziti and campanelle all work well
1Tbspolive oil
19oz.Johnsonville mild Italian sausage, halved and sliced
1medium white oniondiced
1red bell pepperdiced
1½tspgarlicminced
28oz.diced tomatoes, undrained
2tspdried basil
½tspdried oregano
½tspsugar
½tspsalt
¼tspblack pepper
½cupheavy cream
2cupsmozzarella cheesegrated
{optional garnish} fresh basilchopped
Instructions
Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside. (Tip: Toss cooked pasta in ~2 Tbsp of milk to prevent it from sticking together.)
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Add olive oil to a large cast iron skillet and place over medium-high heat. Once hot, add Italian sausage, onion and bell pepper. Let cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-12 minutes, or until onions have softened slightly. Add garlic and cook for 3-4 minutes more, or until sausage is cooked through.
Reduce heat to medium and add diced tomatoes, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, pepper. Cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring often.
Add cream and bring mixture to a simmer. Simmer for 5-6 minutes, stirring often.
Add cooked pasta and 1 cup of cheese; stir until well combined.
Top skillet with remaining cheese and place in oven. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cheese has fully melted.
{Optional} Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving.
