Ingredients
2¼cupsall-purpose flour
¾cupdark brown sugar
1tspbaking soda
½tspsalt
2tspground ginger
1tspground cinnamon
¼tspallspice
¼tspground cloves
4oz.unsalted butter, melted
¾cupdark molasses
1cupbuttermilk
1large egg
¼cupwater
2tspvanilla extract
{Optionalfor garnish} Powdered sugar
{Optionalfor serving} Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour an 8” square pan; set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together all of the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, allspice and cloves).
In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter and molasses. Pour this mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients; stir until well combined.
Whisk together the remaining ingredients (buttermilk, egg, water and vanilla). Pour this into the bowl with the other ingredients; stir until well combined. Pour batter into prepared baking pan.
Bake at 350°F for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.
Let cool for 20 minutes before serving.
{Optional} Dust top of cake with powdered sugar. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
