Want to create a mouthwatering sandwich? Start with this delicious Honey Mustard Glazed Ham!
Several months back, I got to talking with one of my buddies about smokers. He’s an avid griller/smoker himself, so I was picking his brain for ideas about fun things to put on the smoker once the temperatures warmed up. He told me that he and his girlfriend (now wife) love to smoke ham. Smoked ham, you say? I’ve seen smoked ham in the store, and I’ve had more than my fair share of smoked ham sandwiches at delis. My friend was kind enough to bring along some smoked ham after our next game (we were at the curling club), and let’s just say that ham didn’t make it home. Sorry, Laura!
Now that warm temperatures have returned to our neck of the woods, I’ve had our grill and smoker running quite often. I haven’t stopped thinking about that smoked ham, though, so I decided it was time to make that happen. I decided to go with a Honey Mustard Glazed Ham since honey mustard goes so well with ham…and with ham sandwiches! I started with a Sugardale® Prestige Bone-In Ham Roast, and I rubbed a honey mustard rub all over the outside of the roast the evening before.
The next morning, that ham went into the smoker for a couple of hours. But wait… there’s more honey mustard love! I also whisked up a quick honey mustard glaze that I brushed onto the ham a couple of times while it was in the smoker. Delicious! I mean, look at that lovely honey mustard glazed ham right before it came off the smoker. Tell me you don’t want to turn that into a sandwich asap!
I know smokers can be intimidating if you’ve never used one. But here’s the thing. They’re actually quite easy to use. Sure, there’s no temperature knob on a smoker, but don’t let that slow you down. Air comes in at the bottom and leaves through the top. To control the temperature, you just control how much air you let pass through the smoker. It really is quite simple! Plus, smokers are a bit like boats. You just gently steer them to where you want to go. In this case, the destination was an amazing Honey Mustard Glazed Ham (or two).
Low and slow is the name of the game when it comes to delicious smoked meats. Oh, and starting with high quality meat is an absolute must. For this Honey Mustard Glazed Ham, I used a couple of Sugardale’s® Prestige Bone-In Ham Roasts. These roasts are already fully cooked and ready-to-eat, and they’re absolutely delicious in their own right. But add in that honey mustard glaze? Now you’ve got something worth bragging to your friends about!
Sugardale’s® Prestige Bone-In Ham Roasts also come with a cooking bag if you want to prepare this ham in the oven instead. (With the cooking bag, this ham roast can be prepared in under an hour, and it will serve 8-10 people. Don’t use the cooking bag if you use a smoker.) Sugardale®, a family-owned company, was founded in 1920. They’re based in Northeast Ohio, and all of their products are made in the United States. (They also make mighty tasty bacon…so if you see that in your store, pick up a pack!)
Funny story: I was outside preparing my smoker for this Honey Mustard Glazed Ham, and my neighbor peeked his head over the fence to see what I was up to. I told him I was smoking a ham, and showed him the Sugardale® ham roasts that I was about to put on the smoker. These roasts are an extra-thick center cut of ham, and my neighbor was surprised with how thick they were. He hadn’t seen a ham roast like that, and he totally went out and picked up one at the store that afternoon! (Of course, I would’ve just shared my smoked ham with him had he asked nicely…)
Once these hams came off the smoker, I carved ’em up “London Broil” style (there’s a handy carving guide that comes with these roasts). After nibbling on my fair share of smoked ham, I decided a ham sandwich was in order for dinner that night. And that Honey Mustard Glazed Ham Sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever
eaten devoured. Even Robbie got in on the game and nibbled on a bit of smoked ham that we gave him for dinner. Speaking of smoked ham, just think how many ways this ham could be used. Smoked Ham Mac & Cheese. Smoked Ham & Egg English Muffins. Smoked Ham and Cheese Omelettes. Smoked Ham…oh, I could go on for a while here.
Your turn! How would you serve this tasty smoked ham?
