On Wednesday night, I had the opportunity to try Stella Artois Cidre for the first time. I had recently seen Cidre in the market, and I was intrigued. I love the taste of freshly-picked fruit, and the package notes that Cidre is made with freshly-picked apples. Ok, you’ve got my attention now! Nevertheless, I was still a bit wary. I’ve always been a big fan of Stella Artois lager, but would the new Cidre just taste like sweetened apple juice? Well, I got my answer on Wednesday. This European-style cider is amazing! I know it’s made from freshly-picked apples, and I must say that the resulting taste is crisp, clean, and fruity. It totally reminds me of the fall, but I found Cidre to be wonderfully refreshing on a summer evening as well.
The Stella Artois Cidre event was held at EPIC Sky, which is an awesome rooftop venue in downtown Chicago. If you’re ever in Chicago and the weather is nice, then you definitely need to visit this place. But I digress! The heatwave of last week is now over, and the weather was absolutely wonderful. So there I was on a rooftop bar in the heart of Chicago with temperatures in the low 70′s. I couldn’t have imagined a better setting to taste the new delicious Stella Artois Cidre!
Stella Artois actually recommends that Cidre (pronounced see-drā) be served in a white wine glass. Although officially a cider, the crisp and fruity tones of Cidre give it a taste that is remarkable reminiscent to wine. In fact, Cidre would be great served with an appetizer platter of cut cheeses, sliced apples, and other similar noshes. If it pairs well with white wine, then I’d venture to say that it will pair well with Cidre, too. And if you’re looking to serve this with a bit heavier fare, I think Cidre would be quite tasty with BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches!
I actually found Cidre to be so tasty that I stopped by the market on the way home from the airport to grab a 4-pack. Yes, that’s right. I didn’t even make it home from Chicago before swinging by the market to grab some Cidre. But truth be told, we have a neighborhood tradition of gathering at different houses in the area every Thursday evening. The only requirement is to bring something to share with others, and I immediately knew that Stella Artois Cidre was going to be my contribution to this week’s party!
So if you enjoy the bright flavors of freshly-picked apples, then I highly recommend picking up some Stella Artois Cidre. Use wine glasses to serve the Cidre, and include a simple tray of cubed cheeses and sliced apples. I can’t imagine a better way to enjoy a summer or fall evening! Cheers!
