I have a confession. Bakeries are one of my absolute worst weaknesses. I can’t walk by a bakery (even supermarket bakeries) without stopping to admire the latest creations. It drives my wife nuts! We might be out doing errands or shopping for fun, and she’ll turn around to find me looking in a bakery window. But here’s the thing: I usually don’t end up getting anything. I just want to learn how to make all of those delicious treats! I’ve learned quite a few tricks over the years in the kitchen, but I recently discovered online cooking and baking courses through Craftsy. The classes include hours of HD-quality videos online and access to both the instructor and fellow classmates. Trust me when I say these classes are worth checking out! Plus, Spiced readers get up to an extra 25% off the registration cost (until December 31)!
Maybe you want to improve your baking skills. Or perhaps you have a friend (or a spouse) who could really benefit from a cooking refresher. Craftsy has a ton of courses to pick from, and the best part is the instructors. I recently took “Artisan Bread Making” with Peter Reinhart. For those of you who love to bake bread, you probably already know Peter Reinhart’s name. Quite simply, he is a bread baking wizard and has published numerous books on the topic. The instructors for other classes are just as impressive, too. For instance, “A Modern Take on Mother Sauces” is taught by James Peterson, who has 15 cookbooks and won the James Beard Award 7 times. Excuse me, did you say he won the James Beard Award 7 times?! And I can take a class directly from him? Sign me up!
The holidays are coming, and you probably have at least one person on your list that you have no idea what to get them. Consider getting them a Craftsy cooking class. I spent a year planning cooking classes for a local kitchenware store, so I know first-hand how popular cooking classes are as gifts. Needless to say, I’ve sat through a lot of cooking classes, and Craftsy’s “Artisan Bread Making” class is hands-down the best one I’ve ever taken! Not only do you have access to a world-class instructor, but you can interact with other students in the class. You can even upload pictures of your creations to get feedback from the instructor and others. (Wait, you mean I can have Peter Reinhart critique an actual loaf of bread I made? Woah.) Plus, most of the Craftsy courses cost less than cooking classes at a local store! With the Craftsy courses, you get lifetime access to the videos and other class resources…and you get to take the classes on your own time. Want to learn how to make a Queen of Sheba cake at 11pm? You can do that!
As I mentioned above, I took the “Artisan Bread Making” class on Craftsy, and I was really impressed with the quality. I absolutely love baking bread (it’s probably my favorite thing to do in the kitchen), and this class polished my skills for making Rustic Baguettes, Classic Ciabattas, and even Chocolate Babka. The Rustic Baguettes I made after taking this class (the ones in the pictures) were probably some of the best bread I’ve ever baked!
